Not getting results? Try making these tweaks to your social media captions.
Social media is the place to be for businesses that want to build a connection with their audiences.
The magic of social media allows us to grow our business in an increasingly online world by connecting with our audiences like never before.
However, with so much competition out there, it’s harder than ever to stand out and make an impact.
There’s so much to think about in getting our social media marketing right and building our brands.
And one essential part of that is in the words we use.
By crafting engaging and authentic captions that connect with our audiences, we are much more likely to convert them into customers or followers.
If you’re not getting the results you want from your social media efforts, it might be time to take a closer look at your social media captions.
Let’s explore some essential tips and tweaks you can make today to ensure your content is clear, concise, and engaging.
Not only will these tips help you create captions that resonate with your audience, but they’ll also make creating your social media content much quicker and easier. Win-win!
So, if you’re ready to take your social media game to the next level, read on to discover how you can write authentic and engaging captions to help you achieve your goals. Let’s go!
Write how you talk
Your audience is much more likely to connect with you and your content if your personality shines through.
Make sure your voice authentically reflects you and your brand.
If someone were to talk to you on the phone, it should sound the same as reading your captions – and be recognisable.
How to do this:
Ask yourself:
- How are you different from everyone else?
- What values or opinions do you have that could come through?
- What content inspires you and sings to your soul?
- Why did you start your business and help who you help?
Make sure your passion comes through. This doesn’t come with adding exclamation marks all over the place, either!
I’m certainly guilty of this and am forever going back and removing excess punctuation.
No, this comes from the words and phrases you use in the first place.
Write with purpose
Why are you writing this caption in the first place? If you don’t know, this goes back to a strategy problem.
Ideally, every post should be published for a reason.
This doesn’t always need to be to sell things either.
Often on social media, the reason will be to build a relationship with your audience.
So when you do come to ask for the sale, they’re ready to do so because they know, like and trust you.
Need help knowing your purpose? Answer these questions:
- What message are you trying to convey?
- What action do you want your audience to take?
- What does your audience need to hear right now
- And then , what’s the best format to deliver this message?
Some messages will have more of an impact in a video, some in long-form like a blog or on social media as a carousel. There’s a huge variety of ways to test delivering each message.
Using a mix means you’re more likely to reach different kinds of people in your audience – different people prefer different formats.
It’s also much easier to create future content by repurposing it into different formats.
No need to reinvent the wheel each time you create content. Go back to a key message you’ve done before and turn it into a new format.
And as we touched on above, each post will have an action you want the reader to take.
Whether that’s something smaller, like liking a post, or bigger, like clicking a link to buy.
So always include a Call To Action (CTA) at the end of each caption.
Here are some CTAs for you to try:
- Sign up to our mailing list
- Share this with a friend
- Like if you agree
- Get in touch to find out more
- Head over to our website to browse our products
Remember – only ask them to do ONE thing per post.
And make it super clear and easy for them to do. Or they just won’t bother.
This is particularly important if you’re asking someone to comment.
This is a big ask for people to stop the scroll and then spend time thinking about what to say.
So asking them to add an emoji or a simple one-word answer is a much easier ask.
Write to show your value
So you’ve got the tone of voice sorted, you know why you’re posting, and now you need to consider whether your audience understands your value.
Your business offers products and services to solve problems and make the world a better place.
That’s a valuable thing – make sure you shout that from the rooftops.
Share your value by offering it to them in your content.
Be helpful, answers questions, and demonstrate your authority by talking to talk and walking the walk.
Sometimes your audience won’t know that you have what they need – or that they need it in the first place!
Highlight problems and pain points your potential leads may have and show them clearly how you are the solution.
Write simply
Have you heard the saying, “Keep it simple, stupid”?
This is actually applicable in nearly all areas of marketing.
If in doubt, cut things out until you are left with the core message.
Frills are nice to have, but if they hide the main point of your content, then it’s doing it a disservice.
To write simply in your social media captions, you can start by making your sentences as short as possible.
Short sentences are easier to skim read.
Which is what the majority of people on social media do.
Most people aren’t there to sit and read lengthy captions – they want to get to the point and move on.
Long sentences and chunky paragraphs are more likely to put people off.
Life is short, people are busy, and you need to give them a reason to stop the scroll so they can start to read your carefully thought-out caption.
Instead, most of the time, your captions need to be short and sweet.
Most importantly, you need to hook your audience into reading the caption in the first place.
Once they’re interested, they may keep going.
You’ve got to grab their attention in just a few seconds, though, or they’ll keep on scrolling.
So that first sentence is SUPER important.
Especially on platforms where it cuts off after the first line – that’s all you have to get their attention.
I will often spend just as much time considering the hook as I will the rest of the caption.
Because unless I get that right, the rest won’t matter, as no one will read it anyway.
Write with emotion
Lastly, let’s tie it all together – why do people read social media captions in the first place?
Why do you reading this, bother to scroll on social media when there are so many other things you could be doing?
Usually, it’s because you want to have fun, right?
You want a distraction from something, to escape from work, to switch your brain off for a minute (or ten!), and ultimately because you want a connection to what’s happening in the world.
Well, keep this in mind when writing your captions.
People are looking for connections.
They want to build relationships, share a laugh, or debate an interesting point.
They want to come away feeling happier, inspired, or educated – better somehow.
We form connections through emotions.
If you think about who you’re more closely connected to in real life, it’s probably the people you love, right?
That’s the strongest emotion there is.
And in your online life, the people you feel connected to probably have inspired you or made you feel some way in the past.
You can use this in your captions by thinking about the emotion you want your audience to have after reading your caption.
Not every caption will get them laughing out loud or falling in love with you.
But you can use emotional words and share personal stories to form a deeper connection with them.
However you can, try to show the human behind the profile.
Whether that is by showing up on video, sharing personal photos of you, or by being vulnerable in your copy – people want to connect with a person, not a ‘brand’.
Even bigger corporate businesses do this by having ‘faces of’ the brand.
It may be scary putting yourself out there. But it is often the things that scare us that are most worthwhile!
Social media captions are a massive part of your social media presence, and writing them authentically and purposefully is essential.
Remember these key points:
- Engaging captions reflect your voice and personality.
- Write purposefully by answering the questions about your message, action, and audience needs.
- Showcase your value by highlighting your business’s solutions and offer help by being an authority in your niche.
- Keep it simple and short, grabbing your audience’s attention with an emotional hook to make them stop scrolling.
Once you’ve done these 4 key things, your captions will engage and convert your audience, helping you to build meaningful relationships and grow your business’s reach.
